My worry and anxiety about setting forth for south east Asia for 3 1/2 weeks with torn menisci and a “no load” knee brace are gratefully but a faint memory. My Pilates instructor in Dallas suggested I go on the trip as a retreat for rehabilitation of my knee. This felt just right, even during the first few nights on the beach at the W Koh Samui, as I walked in the ocean and swam a bit every day.

My next stop was as a returning champion to The Absolute Sanctuary for a ten day stay of absolute bliss. My private suite at the top of the hill overlooked the pool and ocean. A 150 meter walk up and down the steps ended up being a welcome part of the retreat. With only twelve guests in residence, it felt as though I had the whole place to myself. No screaming kids in the pool, no God awful ”resort music” playing, no alcohol, and mostly healthy vegetarian cuisine. Every meal, every smoothy, and every spa treatment was epic.

One of my many favorite delights was a daily broth, a soup of the day and hot water for the juicy limes. Anytime you wanted a little nosh, you could have something warm and filling. Some folks participated in the fitness and wellness programs and a few endured the idiotic cleansing colonics and juicing everyday. I was on my own “GARY-customized” program. Daily activities included swimming, Pilates reformer class, massage, walks to explore local sights, and just doing whatever caught my fancy.

During one walk to town I stopped to watch an amazing kick boxing class, consisting mostly of young Thai men but also a few foreign men and woman.
